6 Key Lessons from My Postdoc Years

While some may view the postdoc years as a dead end, this was not the case for me. In just 2.6 years, I gained valuable experience, published widely, and ultimately secured an academic job. These lessons shaped my path and can help you make the most of your postdoc as well.

Here are six key takeaways that may help you make the most of your postdoc experience.

1. Teamwork

As a PhD student, I was used to working alone. However, my postdoc introduced me to working with diverse teams. This taught me to leverage the expertise of others, leading to more impactful research.

2. Marketing Myself

Postdoc positions are temporary, so I had to be proactive in my job search. Through numerous interviews and presentations, I became comfortable articulating my skills and experience. You must learn how to sell yourself in today’s competitive academic market.

3. Leveraging Collaborations for Publications

By working across multiple projects with different teams, I expanded my research portfolio. Don’t underestimate the importance of building strong relationships with other researchers—it can open doors for co-authorship and future opportunities.

4. Communicating Ambitions Clearly

Early in my postdoc, I made it a point to communicate my career goals with my line manager. This proactive approach helped align my projects with my long-term objectives, such as applying for grants and gaining teaching experience. Make it known that your postdoc is a stepping stone towards your future career.

5. Mentorship Matters

Mentorship, both within and outside my institution, played a pivotal role in my postdoc years. If you’re in a postdoc, seek out mentors who can offer strategic advice tailored to your goals. Their insights can fast-track your progress.

6. Focus on skills

Beyond research, I focused on developing transferable skills like project management, grant writing, teaching, and supervision. These are the skills that prepared me for the next step in my academic career. If you want to move forward in academia, make sure you’re building a well-rounded skill set that goes beyond your research.
