Many PhDs fail to progress, not because of intellectual challenges, but due to tensions and a lack of understanding between candidates and their supervisors. Without mutual understanding and support, even the most promising research can struggle to come to fruition.
Let’s explore how to foster a positive and productive relationship with your supervisor.
1. Understand their workload
Supervisors juggle multiple roles, from teaching and research to administrative duties. A delayed response is rarely personal: it's more about their workload than you. Patience and understanding can go a long way in maintaining a healthy relationship.
2. Clarify expectations early
Supervisors vary in their styles: some are hands-off, while others micromanage. Discuss their expectations upfront. How often should you update them? What level of detail do they prefer? Clear communication from the start avoids misunderstandings later.
3. Recognise their motivations
Not all supervisors focus on the same priorities. Some may emphasise your development, while others are project-focused. Understanding their motivations helps you align your approach and meet their expectations effectively.
4. Process feedback objectively
Feedback can sometimes feel blunt, but it’s meant to improve your work, not criticise you personally. Learn to separate yourself from your research when processing critiques: it’s about the project, not you.
